Review of "Someone like you"

To all those still clued in (if you're clued in i.e.), apologies for the enormous delay in between this post and the previous one. Truth be told, I haven't been able to keep up with my reading as much as I'd hoped to, this year. But I promise this blog is going to see a lot more activity in the coming few weeks.

I, normally, am not a huge fan of Indian books - whether it be fiction or otherwise, because of the poor grammar and inconsistent storyline. "Someone Like You" isn't any different. Co-authored by Durjoy Dutta and Nikita Singh, this book was one of the random reads I borrowed from a friend to while away time at the hostel. For suckers of happily-ever-afters and college romances (like me!), this book is a perfect getaway from reality.

It chronicles the transformations of a nerdy, bespectacled average Jane to the cute chick in college. Add in a villain, two best friends, and a (not-to-mention, yummy) hero - what you get is the quintessential plot line of a Hindi movie. Not that this book promises to be enlightening and informative, but I really wish the characters would have been sketched to reflect reality rather than a rough caricature of a chick flick. Especially the transformation phase was hurried and wasn't to a large extent connected to the real crux of the story, is what I, personally, feel. I haven't read any previous works of the authors, so I'm unable to draw a reference to the style of writing. But, their almost-consistent storyline fails because of poor grammar and a storytelling style that fails to grab eyeballs.

I'm a sucker for rom-coms and chick flicks, and this doesn't really fail me as far as happily-ever-after expectations are concerned. All said and done, I'd give this book a 3 on 5 and would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a light one-time read to while away time and is NOT a Grammar Nazi.

If you've read the book, did you like it? Do comment below and let me know.
